2016 Tulip Court Elections to be held Sept. 9

The 2016 Tulip Court Election will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015.

 

Voting for the 2016 Tulip Court will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. at Stadscentrum, located on the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street North in Orange City.

 

Eligible voters are adults with an Orange City address and 7th through 12th grade students at MOC-Floyd Valley, Unity Christian High School, and Orange City Christian School.

 

The 2016 Tulip Court will be announced after 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Wooden Shoe Carvers Needed

With many tour groups visiting and events happening at Stadscentrum, we’re seeking individuals who are interested in learning to carve wooden shoes.

 

Individuals ages 18+ are welkom to join one of our wooden shoe carving training sessions. Each session will begin at 8 a.m. and take place at Stadscentrum:

Local, Regional and International Authors, Cartoonists Will Join 2015 Author’s Corner

The annual Author’s Corner event taking place during the 75th annual Orange City Tulip Festival will feature authors and cartoonists from the Midwest and the Netherlands.

 

Several local authors will join the Saturday event with their published works, including Orange City authors Renae B. Vander Schaaf, author of “A Place of Refuge,” and Lee and Bonnie Meier, authors of “Letters from Ralph.” Award-winning author James Schaap of Alton, Iowa, will also join the event with many of his books, including his most recent work entitled “Up the Hill.”

 

TFBooksHaveArrivedBill Kalsbeek, an Orange City native and current-part time resident of the community, will join the event with his book, “Celebrating Our Dutch Heritage: The Story of the Orange City Tulip Festival.” Kalsbeek wrote the book to commemorate the festival’s 75th anniversary.

 

Cartoonists Ken Alvine of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Dave Carpenter of Emmetsburg, Iowa, will also join the event with their books entitled “Cartoons and Rhymes for Senior Times” and “The Best of Senior Moments.” Alvine’s “How to Draw Cartoons” books and videos are distributed across the nation to schools and libraries. Carpenter’s cartoons regularly appear in well-known publications including The Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens magazine, among others.

 

Mark ZegelingMark Zegeling, a publisher and author based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, will visit Orange City during his international tour in both the United States and Canada.  In addition to joining Author’s Corner, Zegeling will give lectures at the Orange City Public Library at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16.

 

Zegeling’s book, “Little Kingdom by the Sea, a Celebration of Dutch Cultural Heritage and Architecture,” is considered a walking guide through history in the Netherlands. In his book, Zegeling tells the stories of the Netherlands houses that are replicated in Delft Blue miniature houses and given to Business Class passengers on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

 

Author’s Corner will take place in conjunction with Tulip Festival’s ArtBurst event on Saturday, May 16. The events will take place on the lawn of the Sioux County Courthouse from 9 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. The events are free to attend, and attendees are welcome to visit with and purchase pieces from the authors and artists.

Commemorative Quilt Created for 75th Annual Tulip Festival

Tulip Festival Commemorative QuiltIn celebration of the 75th annual Tulip Festival, a commemorate quilt was designed and created by members of the Sioux Prairie Quilt Guild.

 

The quilt, named “Our Roots,” features several buildings of Dutch architecture and two windmills, designed after buildings in Orange City and the Netherlands. It is sized at 60 inches wide by 75 inches in height. The custom quilt blocks were created by Linda Feikema, Kymberly Pease, and Nancy Zeutenhorst, members of the Sioux Prairie Quilt Guild. The machine quilting was completed by Terri Vanden Bosch, also a member of the Sioux Prairie Quilt Guild.

 

The commemorative quilt will be on display and available for purchase through a silent auction at the Quilt Show during Tulip Festival. The silent auction will run all three days of the Quilt Show, with a buy-it-now option available.

 

The Quilt Show is organized by the Sioux Prairie Quilt Guild and will take place at Prairie Winds Event Center. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Admission to the show is $5 per person, and tickets are also available in the Tulip Festival Value Books.

Tulip Festival Will Host Cruise-In Car Show on Saturday

The Orange CitTF Car Show Weby Tulip Festival will host a cruise-in car show during its 75th anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 16.

 

Individuals who own and maintain classic cars are welcome to join the event. Pre-registration is not required for the cruise-in. There is no entry fee for the show, and a freewill donation will be collected for the local Relay for Life chapter.

 

The annual cruise-in car show, a long-standing event at Tulip Festival, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Central Avenue and 4th Street North. Participants are invited to drive their classic cars in the Saturday evening parade as well, beginning at 6 p.m.

2015 Tulip Festival Will Feature Fireworks on Friday Evening

In celebration of the 75th annual Tulip Festival, the Steering Committee and Revival Animal Health of Orange City are pleased to announce a fireworks show as a conclusion to the Friday, May 15, festivities.

 

The fireworks display will begin at approximately 10 p.m. on Friday. The fireworks will be launched near the south end of Orange City’s Industrial Park, due east of Revival Animal Health. The fireworks will be viewable along the south section of Albany Avenue.

 

“We are so grateful for Revival Animal Health’s sponsorship of this year’s fireworks display,” says Arlyn Schaap, co-chairman of the Tulip Festival Steering Committee. “We congratulate them on 25 years of business, and look forward to offering fireworks in celebration of milestone years for both organizations.”

 

Premier Pyrotechnics, Inc. of Yankton, S.D., will design and produce this year’s fireworks show.

 

“We extend our gratitude to Premier Pyrotechnics, Inc., the City of Orange City, and the Orange City Fire Department for their great assistance with this festival highlight,” says Schaap.

 

In case of inclement weather, the fireworks display will take place on Saturday, May 16, at the same time and location.

2015 Tulip Festival Concerts Will Open Onstage Orange City Summer Series

Orange City’s own Usual Suspects will perform on Thurs., May 14 and Sat., May 16.

Three bands will perform during Tulip Festival to kick off the Orange City Arts Council’s annual summer series, Onstage Orange City.

 

Orange City’s own Usual Suspects will perform on Thursday night, May 14. The band plays a variety of musical styles, including classic acoustic-based pop and rock, blues, contemporary folk and original songs. The Usual Suspects will also perform during Tulip Festival’s ArtBurst event on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. in the Straatmarkt.

Now Serving 7 will perform for the third consecutive year at Tulip Festival on Fri., May 15.

Now Serving 7, a Christian electro-coustic pop/rock band based in Pella, Iowa, will take the stage on Friday night, May 15.  They have performed with artists like Jeremy Camp and Superchick and at official NASCAR events.  Making their third consecutive-year appearance at Tulip Festival, Now Serving 7 will perform songs from their debut album, “I Will Go.”

Damon Dotson and his band will perform on Sat., May 16.

Damon Dotson is a singer-songwriter originally from Okoboji, Iowa. He performs in a variety of venues throughout the Midwest, including Minneapolis, Omaha and Chicago. He has opened for artists Willie Nelson and the Beach Boys, among others. Dotson and his band members will perform songs from their new and rising album, “Tumblin’,”on Saturday night, May 16.

 

“We’re excited to partner with the Orange City Arts Council to open their summer series during Tulip Festival,” says Juliana Pennings, Tulip Festival & Community Tourism Director. “We are grateful for the many ways the Orange City Arts Council continues to promote and bring the arts to our community.”

 

The concerts will take place at the band shell in Windmill Park at 7:30 p.m. each evening, and there is no cost to attend. The rain location for the concerts is the Orange City Town Hall.

 

Onstage Orange City is a program sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council, and brings in local, regional, national and international artists to perform throughout the summer. Stadscentrum Grand Opening to be held May 6

Join us for the grand opening of Stadscentrum, the newly-constructed home to Orange City’s Dutch street organ and wooden shoe-making equipment. Stadscentrum will also be home to the original, commissioned painting for the 75th annual Tulip Festival.

The Orange City Development Corporation is pleased to announce the grand opening of Stadscentrum, and invites the public to an open house on Wednesday, May 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.

 

Stadscentrum, located on the corner of Central Avenue and 2nd Street, is the newly constructed home to Orange City’s Dutch street organ and wooden shoe-making equipment. Two kiosks in Stadscentrum also depict the history of Tulip Festival through photos, narrative and artifacts.

 

The official ribbon cutting will take place to begin the evening open house on May 6, after which the doors to Stadscentrum will be opened for the first time for viewing.

 

As an additional highlight to the evening, the Tulip Festival Steering Committee will auction off signed print number 1/75 by artist John E. Vander Stelt at 6:30 p.m. The art piece, entitled “A Faithful Walk,” was commissioned for the 75th annual Tulip Festival. The framed print is available for viewing prior to the auction at the Dove Christian Book Store.

 

“We’re excited to open Stadscentrum to the public,” says Les Douma, chairman of the Stadscentrum Committee. “It’s a wonderful addition to downtown Orange City and another unique tourism aspect to our community.”

 

Following the grand opening, Stadscentrum will be open during Tulip Festival and throughout the year for special events and tours for both the Orange City community and visitors.

2015 Tulip Festival Fly-In Breakfast Will Feature Historic Aircraft

The annual Tulip Festival Fly-In Breakfast, slated for Saturday, May 16, will feature World War II aircraft and a historical static display of artifacts from that time period.

 

The Fagen Fighters WWII Museum of Granite Falls, Minn., and The Joe Foss Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force from Sioux Falls, S.D., will participate in the event with aircraft from their collections. The World War II aircraft on display at the Fly-In Breakfast could include one or more from the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum collection that consists of a P-51 Mustang, P-40, P-38, B-25, and various training aircraft. The Joe Foss Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force will also bring an aircraft and a historical static display from World War II.

 

Under the organization of the local Flying Dutchmen Pilots Association, the historic aircraft will fly in, weather permitting, at approximately 9 a.m. with departure scheduled at approximately 10 a.m.

 

“These World War II aircraft represent a significant history and patriotism for our country,” says Mark Vogel, a member of the Flying Dutchmen Pilots Association.

 

In addition to the historic aircraft, the event will feature local fly-in and Medevac aircraft.

 

The Flying Dutchmen Pilots Association, which recently re-formed after their original founding in the 1960s, aims to promote local aviation. “One of the key objectives of the group is to create an environment for aviation education for the next generation,” says Vogel.

 

The Fly-In Breakfast will take place at the Orange City Municipal Airport (KORC). Rise Ministries of Sheldon, Iowa, will serve a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m.  The event is free to attend, and a freewill donation will be collected for breakfast.

 

The Fly-In Breakfast has been a highlight of the Orange City Tulip Festival for over 40 years for both the local community and area pilots.
