2018 Tulip Court Election to be held September 20

Voting for the 2018 Tulip Court will take place from 12 to 8 p.m. at Stadscentrum, located on the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street North in Orange City.

Candidates for the 2018 Court are: Alexa Arends, daughter of Troy and Darla Arends; Megan Brower, daughter of Derek and Joan Brower; Jade De Kok, daughter of Scott and Becki De Kok; Kaitlyn Hulstein, daughter of Duane and Judy Hulstein, Josie Maasdam, daughter of Kirk and Becky Maasdam; Haley Smit, daughter of Jason and Kara Smit; Juliana Tien, daughter of Gale and Cathie Tien; Kyra Vande Brake, daughter of Steven and Mary Vande Brake; Corinne Wiese, daughter of Robert and Tricia Wiese.

Eligible voters are adults with an Orange City address and 7th through 12th grade students at MOC-Floyd Valley, Orange City Christian School and Unity Christian High School.

2018 Night Show Production Announced

The Tulip Festival Steering Committee has announced the annual Night Show musical production for May 15-19, 2018, as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

“Be Our Guest!” The Academy Award-winning film comes to life in this romantic and beloved take on the classic fairytale. Epic scenery, custom built enchanted sets, and professional costumes will make this show one for all ages, and the largest production ever before performed on the Tulip Festival stage.

Guests of this production will step into an enchanted world of this “tale as old as time.”  The story tells of a young woman, named Belle, living in a provincial town, yet dreams of more.  And Beast, who is actually a young prince trapped under a spell of enchantments.  The cast will be filled with memorable characters; a talkative know it all clock, a kindhearted candelabra, a young precocious tea cup and his lovable mother tea pot, just to name a few.  If the Beast can learn to love, and be loved in return, the curse will end and he and all in the castle will return to their normal selves, but time is running out.

Directing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be Todd Vande Griend.  This is the 19th production Vande Griend has been a part of.  “I am excited to take on the challenge of this enormous production, and bringing the enchantment and excitement of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to Tulip Festival stage in 2018,” Vande Griend said.

Vande Griend is joined in the leadership of the 2018 Night Show by Sarah Weber, Producer, Becky Donahue, Choreographer.

The cast of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will consist of approximately 35-40 people ages 16 and older. Auditions will be held in January 2018. Join us for this live production, May 15-19 at the Unity Knight Center, in Orange City, IA.  We are adding a Tuesday Show that will begin at 6:30 p.m. Other showtimes will begin promptly at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the Night Show will go on sale for $20 each on Monday, January 29, 2018, at the Orange City Tulip Festival/Chamber of Commerce office.

2017 Dutch Costume Exchange set for April 5

The annual Tulip Festival Dutch Costume Exchange is set for Wednesday, April 5. The event will take place from 2 to 6:30 p.m. at Stadscentrum, located at the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street North in Orange City.

Individuals interested in selling Dutch costumes can bring them to the Tulip Festival office, located at 509 8th Street SE, on Monday, April 3 or Tuesday, April 4.

Sellers should determine the price of their costumes, and are asked to print and fill out the seller’s form. Please note that the Tulip Festival Steering Committee only accepts authentic Dutch costumes for the exchange.

Individuals interested in purchasing Dutch costumes don’t need to have an authentic Dutch costume to sell, and individuals interested in selling authentic Dutch costumes don’t need to purchase others.

 A variety of costumes will be available for purchase for children and adults.

2017 Parade Marshals Introduced

The Tulip Festival Steering Committee is very pleased to honor the Pressman-Koster Post 329 of The American Legion as the parade marshals for the 77th annual event.

Each year a Parade Marshal is chosen for the festival.  This honor is given to recognize someone for the contributions they have made to the festival in past years.

This year, instead of honoring an individual, we chose to honor a group of people.  This group currently consists of 150 members.  They not only lead every parade during the festival, they also serve our community by conducting Memorial Day services as well as military funerals.  They help our youth by donating to after prom parties, supporting the Boy Scouts and American Legion summer baseball and sending 4 young men to the Boys State Conference each summer.  This group was chartered in 1919 as the John C. Pressman post who gave his life in World War I.  After World War II, the name was changed to the Pressman-Kosters post in honor of Allen and Henry Kosters who were killed in World War II.

2017 Tulip Court Costumes Revealed

The Annual Orange City Tulip Festival Extravaganza was held Wednesday, march 15, at Prarie Winds Event Center. The event featured a luncheon and program during which the costumes for the 2017 Tulip Queen and Court were revealed and the 2017 parade marshals were introduced.

Members of the 2017 Tulip Court are Queen Karli Lang is the daughter of Chris and Sherry Lang; Emma De Jong, daughter of Douglas and Jamie De Jong; Olivia Duesenberg, daughter of Gary and Rachel Duesenberg; Sydnee Olson, daughter of Jody and Denene Nibbelink and Chad and Amanda Olson; and Noelle Sampson, daughter of Brent and Teresa Sampson.

The costume this year is from the village of Hoorn which is located in the west Friesland region, in the province of North Holland.  This costume is circa 1850.

In 1850, Hoorn was a seaport village, known for its connection to, and wealth from, the East India Trading Company. The fact that rich sea merchants sought to parade their wealth is evident in the women’s expensive costume– at the time, the skirt would have been made from expensive floral chintz, the apron, and jacket made from a silk, which had probably been imported by the East India Trading company.  In addition, the expensive laces on the hat, the red or coral colored gemstones, dangling from gold earrings and the hats, as well as the gold oorijizer all speak of the affluence that this village boasted.

Queen Karli is wearing a dark red jacket with a peplum, and complimentary floral pattern of gold, greens, and dark red.  Her apron is gold as well.  The beaded purse, with the striking white beads atop the black velveteen, is a design that has been found in the Friesian area at this time period as well.

The Court is wearing a lovely blue jacket, also with a peplum, and the skirt is a floral of greens, dark pink, and gold, on a cream background, with green aprons.

The hats are also very interesting– on the crown, it is comprised of a black skull cap, followed by a lace overlay, and lastly, a layer of royal blue tulle. However, the most interesting part of the hat, in addition to the ornate gold oorijizer and hat pins, is the ruffle at the back.  While it appears to be rolled on dowels, it is in fact given it’s rolled look by an intricate pleating technique.

The 2017 Tulip Court also presented their traveling road show titled “Battle of the Tulips” for the first time. The road show, which the festival royalty wrote and will present to various organizations, schools, and residential care facilities this spring,  tells of the events and attractions at Tulip Festival and gives a detailed overview of their Costumes from Hoorn.

 

2017 Orange City Tulip Queen Crowned

Karli Lang was crowned the 2017 Tulip Festival Queen on Monday, Nov. 14. Karli will reign over the 77th annual Tulip Festival, set for May 18, 19 and 20, 2017.

A senior at MOC-FV in Orange City, Karli is the daughter of Chris and Sherry Lang.

Karli is joined on the 2017 Tulip Court by court members Emma De Jong, daughter of Douglas and Jamie De Jong; Olivia Duesenberg, daughter of Gary and Rachel Duesenberg; Sydnee Olson, daughter of Jody and Denene Nibbelink and Chad and Amanda Olson; and Noelle Sampson, daughter of Brent and Teresa Sampson.

Karli and her court members spent Monday afternoon interviewing with judges Kelsi Salava, Jim Plagge and Dan Breen.

A pageant was held for the public in the evening. Each of the candidates answered questions on various topics and gave an individual presentation. Karli was crowned queen as a conclusion to the evening.

Karli and her court will serve as ambassadors for the Orange City Tulip Festival as they travel in the spring, making several media and public appearances.

2017 Tulip Festival Night Show is announced

The Tulip Festival Steering Committee has announced the annual Night Show musical production for May 17-20, 2017, as Shrek the Musical.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek the Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears.

shrek_4c_title“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

Shrek presents a treasure trove of creative opportunities, including costumes, sets, puppets (there is a fire-breathing dragon after all) and more!  Fun for the whole family, Shrek proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.

“We are thrilled to be co-directing this new musical,” comments Gail Marincovich and Todd McDonald, 2017 Night Show co-directors. “Shrek the Musical is fun, entertaining, and unique, and has a relevant message for people of ALL ages.”

Marincovich and McDonald are joined in the leadership of the 2017 Night Show by Melody De Wit, music director, and Todd Vande Griend, producer.

The cast of Shrek the Musical will consist of approximately 20-30 people. Auditions for the Night Show will take place on Jan. 11, 12, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Jan. 14, 2017, from 9 to 11 a.m.  All auditions will take place at a site to be announced. Those wishing to try-out do not need to prepare any material prior to the auditions. Auditions are open to those in high school and adults of all ages.

Tickets for the Night Show will go on sale for $20 each on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at the Orange City Tulip Festival/Chamber of Commerce office.

The show times are Wed May 17-Saturday May 20 at 8:00 pm.

Tulip Festival concerts will open 2016 Onstage Orange City summer series

Four bands will perform during Tulip Festival to kick off the Orange City Arts Council’s annual summer series, Onstage Orange City.

Usual Suspects 2015Orange City’s own Usual Suspects will perform on Wednesday night, May 18, during the Tulip Festival Cruise-in Car Show. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place on Central Avenue.  The band plays a variety of musical styles, including classic acoustic-based pop and rock, blues, contemporary folk and original songs. The Usual Suspects will also perform during Tulip Festival’s ArtBurst event on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. in the Straatmarkt.

 

Mankato Riverblenders (2)The Mankato Riverblenders Barbershop Chorus will entertain on Thursday night, May 19. The group has provided “family entertainment through barbershop harmony” since 1973. They’ve performed all over the Midwest, as well as in Canada, England and Wales. A 35-member chorus will provide A cappella music in three sets: gospel, patriotic and modern. Two quartets from the group will sing between sets, one of which has excelled in both district and international competitions.

Now Serving 7, a Christian electro-coustic pop/rock band, will take the stage on Friday night, May 20.  They have performed with artists including Jeremy Camp and Superchick, and have also performed at official NASCAR events.  Making their fourth consecutive-year appearance at Tulip Festival, Now Serving 7 will perform songs from their current album, “I Will Go.”

 

 

Bella RuseBella Ruse will close the Tulip Festival concert series on Saturday night, May 21. The music of Orange City native Joseph Barker and his wife, Kay, is described as a “combination of airy folk and crunchy pop.” Kay’s “antique voice” and Joseph’s “mournful guitar,” combined with an array of instruments including a typewriter, suitcase organ, glockenspiel and kazoos, have earned them national recognition. Bella Ruse has traveled across the United States to perform concerts and radio tours and has been recognized as a “must-see act.”

 

The concerts on May 19, 20 and 21 will take place at the band shell in Windmill Park at 7:30 p.m., and there is no cost to attend. The rain location for the concerts is the Orange City Town Hall.

 

Onstage Orange City is a program sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council, and brings in local, regional, national and international artists to perform throughout the summer. Tulip Festival will host Cruise-In Car Show

The Orange City Tulip Festival will host a cruise-in car show as a kick-off to its 76th annual celebration on Wednesday, May 18. The annual cruise-in car show, a long-standing event at Tulip Festival, will begin at 6 p.m. on Second Street North and Central Avenue in Orange City.

Individuals who own and maintain classic cars are welcome to join the event. The Tri-State Cruisers will also join the car show. Pre-registration is not required for the cruise-in. There is no entry fee for the show, and a freewill donation will be collected for the local Relay for Life chapter.

Orange City’s own Usual Suspects will provide musical entertainment during the event.

Celebration at Stadscentrum set for May 4

An open house at Stadscentrum is set for Wednesday, May 4 in celebration of its one year anniversary. The event will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Located on the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street North in Orange City, Stadscentrum, or “city center,” opened in May of 2015. The building is home to Orange City’s wooden shoe carving equipment and 107-year-old Dutch street organ. Two kiosks in Stadscentrum depict the history of Tulip Festival through photos, narrative and artifacts. Several mounted photos also show the history and vibrancy of Orange City.

In its inaugural year, visitors from nearly 20 states and more than 10 countries have toured Stadscentrum, both during Tulip Festival and throughout the year. In addition to visitor tours, a variety of events and activities have taken place at Stadscentrum, including the 2016 Tulip Court election, a trick-or-treat photo booth, Tour of Trees during the holiday season, Sinterklaas Day, and Tulip Festival Dutch costume exchange.

The Dutch street organ will be played and wooden shoe carving demonstrations will take place during the open house.

The Orange City Dutch Heritage Boosters will also serve poffertjes at the Little White Store on May 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
