2015 Tulip Festival Extravaganza to be Held March 18

The date for the annual Tulip Festival Extravaganza has been set for Wednesday, March 18. The event will take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Prairie Winds Event Center, and will feature a luncheon and program.

 

The province of Queen Cara Venema and her royal Court’s costumes will be revealed, and they will present their traveling road show. In addition, the Tulip Festival Steering Committee will introduce the 2015 Parade Marshal.

 

The commissioned art piece by local artist John E. Vander Stelt will also be unveiled at the Extravaganza. Prints of the piece will be available following the event, a limited number of which will be signed by Vander Stelt.

 

“We are looking forward to the Extravaganza with great anticipation,” says Arlyn Schaap, co-chairman of the Steering Committee. “The event is a wonderful way to begin the spring activities for the festival.”

 

Tickets for the event are $15 each through March 6, and $20 each beginning March 7. Tickets can be purchased at the Tulip Festival/Chamber of Commerce office.

 

 

 

Craft Show Introduced for 2015 Tulip Festival

The Tulip Festival Steering Committee is pleased to announce that a craft show will be added to this year’s list of events during the festival. The craft show will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, in the basement of Iowa State Bank.

 

“We’re excited to add a craft show to the festival, as it will add a unique aspect to our many events and attractions for visitors and community members to enjoy,” says Bea Schaap, co-chairperson of the Steering Committee.

 

Individuals who create handmade, original crafts are invited to apply for the craft show, and are encouraged to include Dutch items as a portion of their items to sell. Only handmade, original items will be accepted into the show, and no food or beverage items will be accepted.

 

Applications for the craft show are available on the festival’s website, and are open until March 15 or until the booths are full. Applications from individuals meeting the craft show requirements will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Individuals accepted will be notified by April 1, and an entry fee of $35 will be due by April 30 following acceptance. Questions can be directed to the Tulip Festival office at 712-707-4510.

 

 

Artwork Commissioned for 75th Annual Tulip Festival

The Tulip Festival Steering Committee is pleased to announce a commemorative art piece for the 2015 event, slated for May 14-16.

The artwork for the 75th annual Tulip Festival will be an oil painting by local artist John E. Vander Stelt. Vander Stelt, owner of Vander Stelt Studios in Maurice, Iowa, will reveal the painting at the Tulip Festival Extravaganza on Wednesday, March 18. Prints of the piece will be available following the event. The original painting will be on display in Stadscentrum during Tulip Festival.

“We are very much looking forward to the reveal of John’s painting, as we know it will capture a dynamic and historical aspect of the festival,” says Arlyn Schaap, co-chairman of the Steering Committee. “We are grateful for John’s willingness and ability to capture the true essence of our festival, as we celebrate 75 years of ‘Remembering Our Roots.’”

Artists Invited to Apply to Exhibit Work During 2015 ArtBurst

Artists from the four-state region and beyond are invited to apply to exhibit their work at ArtBurst during the 75th annual Orange City Tulip Festival.

 

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, ArtBurst is a juried exhibition of fine art. An estimated 35,000 people per day are expected to attend the three-day Tulip Festival May 14-16, and thousands browse the artists’ booths set up on the grounds of the historic Sioux County Courthouse on Saturday.

 

Applications will be accepted from anyone who produces original fine art. All art must be designed and executed by the accepted artist, and at least 75 percent of the artist’s exhibit must consist of original work. No more than 25 percent may be giclees or reproductions. ArtBurst artists will be chosen by a jury, which will make its selections based on the aesthetic quality of the art and the number of artists in each medium. The application deadline is March 15, and applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision by April 1.

 

To apply, submit a completed application form, four photos showing the artist’s work, a photo of the artist’s booth, a $10 non-refundable check for the jury fee, and a $50 check for each 10-by-10-foot booth space. Checks should be made out to the Orange City Tulip Festival, with “ArtBurst” on the memo line, and mailed to Orange City Tulip Festival, Attn: ArtBurst Coordinator, 509 8th Street SE, Orange City, IA 51041.

2015 Tulip Festival Ticket Sales Begin February 2

Tickets for the 2015 Tulip Festival Extravaganza, reserved parade seats, and Night Show will go on sale on Monday, Feb. 2. Ticket sales will begin at 9 a.m. at the Orange City Tulip Festival/Chamber of Commerce office.

Reserved parade seats are $4 each. Seats are reserved beginning at 1 p.m. each day of the festival, and are reserved for Straatfeest, street scrubbing, and the Volksparade.

 

Tickets for the 2015 Night Show, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” are $20 each. The production will take place at Unity Christian Knight Center May 13-16, beginning nightly at 8 p.m.

Historical Book Introduced for 75th Annual Event

TulipFestivalHistoricalBookCoverThe Tulip Festival Steering Committee is pleased to introduce a commemorative book for the upcoming 75th annual Tulip Festival, slated for May 14-16.

The book, entitled “Celebrating Our Dutch Heritage: The Story of the Orange City Tulip Festival,” was written by Bill Kalsbeek, an Orange City native and current part-time resident of the community. The book documents the festival’s history and contains hundreds of images that span the decades of the event.

“We are very grateful for Bill and his willingness to research the history and tell the story of the festival since its founding in the 1930s,” says Arlyn Schaap, co-chairman of the Steering Committee. “We are excited to share the book with community members and visitors alike.”

Kalsbeek will hold book signings during Tulip Festival, and attendees will have the opportunity to have their books signed and stamped with the 75th annual Tulip Festival seal. The book signings will take place at Stadscentrum from 9 to 10 a.m. each day of the festival.

“We extend many thanks to the individuals who assisted in the completion of this book through their collections, focus groups, interviews, and editing,” says Schaap. “The book is a wonderful representation of the dedication our community holds for the festival, both now and in years past.”

2015 Tulip Festival Night Show Auditions Scheduled

Auditions for the 2015 Tulip Festival Night Show, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” are scheduled for four evenings in January.

 

Adults and high school and college students can audition for the show on Jan. 15, 19 or 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. Children ages 9-12 can audition on Jan. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. All auditions will take place at the Orange City Town Hall. Individuals wishing to audition do not need to prepare any material prior to the auditions, but are asked to bring their schedules for February through May.

 

The cast of “Mary Poppins” will consist of approximately 30 people, including Mary Poppins, members of the Banks family, Mrs. Brill, Robertson Ay, Katie Nanna, the Banks’ neighbors and former nanny, and many more. Non-singing roles are also available in the production.

 

Tickets for the Night Show will go on sale for $20 each on Monday, Feb. 2 at the Orange City Tulip Festival/Chamber of Commerce office.

2015 Tulip Festival Night Show Announced

The 2015 Orange City Tulip Festival Steering Committee has announced the annual Night Show musical production for the May festival as Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins.”

 

“’Mary Poppins’ is a familiar story with characters we love, yet the musical version is new and fresh with several unexpected twists and turns to keep you on your toes,” says Lois Estell, 2015 Night Show director. Dan Mangold and Melody De Wit will join Estell as music directors for the production.

 

While the musical production offers the audience surprises throughout, Estell notes that “several of our favorite songs from the movie made it into the musical, such as ‘A Spoonful of Sugar,’ ‘Feed the Birds,’ ’Step in Time,’ and of course, ’Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!’”

 

“It’s a great choice for the 75th annual Tulip Festival because it’s a wonderfully familiar story from our childhood filled with surprises and brand new adventures,” says Estell. The May 2015 production will be the first time the Tulip Festival Night Show has been “Mary Poppins.”

2015 Tulip Queen Crowned

Cara Venema was crowned the 2015 Tulip Festival Queen on Monday, November 24, 2014. Venema will reign over the 75th annual Tulip Festival, happening May 14, 15 and 16 in 2015.

 

A senior at MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City, Venema is the daughter of Dan and Tonya Venema.

 

Venema is joined on the 2015 Tulip Court by court members Jennifer Droog, daughter of Rick and Sue Droog; Sydney Huizenga, daughter of Darren and Dawn Huizenga; Micah Vande Vegte, daughter of Gary and Amy Vande Vegte; and Emily Wielenga, daughter of Kevin and Dixie Wielenga.

 

Venema and her court members spent Monday afternoon giving presentations to and answering questions with judges Mary Lou Vander Wel, Dr. King Hickman and Kayla Craig.

 

A pageant was held for the public in the evening. Each of the candidates answered questions on various topics and gave individual presentations. Venema was crowned queen as a conclusion to the evening.

 

Venema and her court will serve as ambassadors for the city of Orange City and Tulip Festival. They will travel around the state making appearances on television and radio stations, as well as visits to the state capitol, schools, residential facilities, and various clubs and organizations.

 

 

2015 Tulip Queen Pageant to be Held

The 2015 Tulip Queen Pageant will be held on Monday, November 24 at the Unity Christian Knight Center. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $3 for attendees.

 

Tulip Queen candidates will give presentations on Orange City and will be interviewed by both the judges and emcees of the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the 2015 Tulip Queen during the pageant. The 2015 Tulip Queen will be crowned as a conlclusion to the event.

 

The 2015 Tulip Festival Night Show production will also be announced at the event.
